Have A Termite Infestation? 4 Species That Could Be Causing Damage In Your Home

Carlos Douglas

It can be extremely frustrating to deal with a termite infestation on your property. Unfortunately, if you fail to eliminate these critters promptly, they can damage wooden components such as door frames and parts of your foundation. It is important to note that there are different types of termites, and they swarm during different seasons. So, if you believe that you have an infestation, speak to a termite control expert to identify the species affecting your property and implement effective ways to remove them. Here are common species you should know about:

Subterranean Termites

If you reside in an area that experiences a damp and hot climate, this is one of the termite species you're likely to encounter in your home. They are either black, dark brown, or creamy white, with a rectangular, narrow head. Additionally, they feature saw-tooth jaws that can bite even on tiny wood fragments. To some homeowners, this may not seem too damaging, yet, if you're dealing with a colony of millions, the pests can cause significant damage to your property in a short time.

Drywood Termites

These termites reside in areas with warm weather conditions. Unlike other termite species, drywood termites don't tunnel underground but live in dried-out wood like wooden flooring and dead trees. They are usually creamy white with long, narrow bodies. In case of an infestation, you'll notice these termites' droppings, known as frass, near wooden structures within your home.

Dampwood Termites

As their name suggests, damp wood termites thrive in areas with plenty of moisture. For instance, if you have leaks inside your home and don't address them promptly, they create a conducive environment for a dampwood termite infestation. Note that these termites are reddish-brown, have an outer shell, and are about an inch long. To help prevent these termites from invading your home, ensure that you quickly fix water leaks whenever they arise and remove wet tree limbs or lumber from your property.

Formosan Termites

These pests are voracious eaters that reside in underground tunnels but are also known for creating other nests on the ground surface, appearing as mud tubes. They grow to half an inch and are brown or creamy. Moreover, these critters live in large colonies and consume items ranging from dead wood in your yard to wooden floors and window frames.

If you notice any termites discussed in this guide, you need to seek timely professional pest removal services. This will go towards ensuring that you don't have to deal with significant damage to your home due to an escalated infestation.
